Vicky Cristina Barcelona
 Vicky Cristina Barcelona
In Woody Allen's latest, two young American women, Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Scarlett Johansson) come to Barcelona for a summer holiday. Vicky is sensible and engaged to be married; Cristina is emotionally and sexually adventurous. In Barcelona, they're drawn into a series of unconventional romantic entanglements with Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem), a charismatic painter, who is still involved with his tempestuous ex-wife Maria Elena (Penélope Cruz). Set against the luscious Mediterranean sensuality of Barcelona, it’s a funny and open-minded celebration of love in all its configurations. (PG13, 96 mins)

The Four Horsemen (at Studio for Healing Arts)
The Four Horsemen (at Studio for Healing Arts)
Self-proclaimed scientific naturalists and atheists Richard Dawkins (The God Delusion), Daniel Dennett (Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon), Sam Harris (The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason) and Christopher Hitchens (God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything) sat down for a first-of-its-kind, unmoderated 2-hour discussion, convened by The Richard Dawkins Foundation and filmed by Josh Timonen. All four authors have recently received a large amount of media attention for their writings against religion - some positive, and some negative. In this conversation the group discusses some tough questions about religion that face the world today, and propose new strategies for going forward. We will draw from Chris Hedge's new book, I Don't Believe in Atheists, to offer a critique of the opinions presented in the film.

Shows Friday, Aug 22 at 7:15 at the Studio for the Healing Arts, located one block north of the Naro at 1611 Colley Ave (2nd floor). Facilitated by Mike Tarpey, who teaches philosophy at TCC.

PLEASE NOTE: The showing at A.R.E. on Sat, Aug 23 has been cancelled.

Hell on Wheels
 Hell on Wheels
This documentary takes a from-the-trenches look at the dizzying clash of athleticism, exhibitionism, egos, politics, and business that is modern-era roller derby. A group of hard-hitting Texas women overcome obstacles in resurrecting and revamping the sport, only to find internal strife ripping the fledgling organization apart. Two leagues emerge from the clash, and what follows ignites an international roller derby revival. Shot over a five-year period by Bob Ray and Werner Campbell, and edited by award-winning editor Conor O’Neill (Murderball) and features original music by …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead. Admission for all seats $8, although your Naro Ticket Book is still valid. (90 mins)

Mal Vincent hosts The Last Picture Show
Mal Vincent hosts The Last Picture Show
One of the great ensemble casts of all cinema enact the drama of a backwoods Texas town where the local movie theater is about to close, and innocence is about to be lost. Set during the Korean conflict, Peter Bogdanovitch’s film classic (presented here in its “director’s cut”) is about the changing culture of America in the 1950s. Based on the novel by Larry McMurtry (who more recently won the Academy Award for “Brokeback Mountain”), it features Ben Johnson and Cloris Leachman, both of whom won Oscars for their performances. Ellen Burstyn, winner of the first ON Film Festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award (sponsored locally by the City of Norfolk and ODU), was also nominated. The cast includes Jeff Bridges, Timothy Bottoms, Eileen Brennan, and Randy Quaid. The film will conclude with the annual audience vote for the festival’s best performances. (1971, 126 mins)
